Rolex Oyster Perpetual Stainless Steel Blue Dial Review

Rolex Oyster Perpetual; Today I'll be looking at a discontinued but still sort of in production Rolex watch. This is most likely the rarest model I've ever seen or held in my hands.

This is another transitional period watch. If you thought this was an Air-King, you'd be right. If you thought this was an Explorer 1, you'd be right. It's an Oyster Perpetual 34.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Colors and Sizes

This one's reference number is 1-1-4-2-0-0. This one has the same reference as the Rolex Air-King, which was released around the same time, but this one is written and branded as the Oyster Perpetual.

34 millimeters, of course, with a blue dial, index hour marks, and Arabic numerals. So somewhat uncommon for an Oyster Perpetual, but more common among Air-King models from 2007 to 2014.

Oyster Perpetual Stainless Steel Case

The case has a nice high polish along the sides, but the front of the case has a satin brush finish, similar to what you'd find on any modern Oyster Perpetual model.

From finger to thumb, that's see two to eight o'clock positions, 34 millimeter, same as what you'd find from 10 to four o'clock positions.

The mono-block middle case, screw-down case back, and Rolex winding crown ensure water resistance to 100 meters (330 feet) below sea level.

So you have that nice luster and the reflections are basically one to one except for the fact that it's domed so nice distorted reflections but your reflections will be perfect nonetheless.

A nice smooth sapphire crystal sits on the very front of the case, making it so you don't get any scratches, nice and scratch resistant so you can always have a clear view of that dial and what a dial this is.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date

This particular watch is dated 2020, so it is technically out of production but is still being sold by authorized dealers.

You can still potentially get these brand new, though you'll most likely get them pre-owned, but we can still technically get these brand new.

Looking at the bezel with my fingerprints, you have a nice, smooth domed all stainless steel or oyster steel bezel on the very front.

When viewed from the front, it has a nice glowing appearance due to the way it plays in the light there, and it is all stainless steel.

Oyster steel being Rolex's own proprietary blend of the highest grades of steel and certain other minerals to make it incredibly strong but also incredibly beautiful at the same time.

Rolexoyste Colors and design

A nice, deep blue that covers the entire range of dark blue values. So the lightest blue will be in the mid-range, sort of a lighter shade, but then it will go deep and deep to almost a midnight blue, almost black, depending on the angle of light, nice sun-ray patterning there all gear shade.

Of course, the Rolex crown at twelve o'clock, as well as the three, six, and nine o'clock, are all white gold, as are the index markers, which are also white gold (18 carat).

You also have Chromalight, or I believe this was the super LumiNova before Chromalight, or it could be Chromalight.

I can't tell by the coloration, but I want to say that this is the super LumiNova, which is still incredibly long lasting, easy to see, and actually quite tasteful in the way it's presented.

The luminescence on the index markers, as well as the hour and minute hands, is completely symmetrical. So you have a good clear view of the time no matter your lighting situation.

Oyster perpetual crown functions

Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch

Taking a look at the crown functions, which are basically the most basic that Rolex has to offer. Unwind the crown at three o'clock; base position allows you to wind the watch.

From a complete stop to full power reserve, about 20 to 30 full winds are all that is required. When you notice the resistance and damping increasing, you've reached your maximum power reserve and no longer need to wind it.

Pull the crown out to the only other position, which stops the seconds hand, allowing you to use the hacking function to precisely position the minute hand.

Winding it clockwise advances that minute hand forward, while winding it counterclockwise advances it backwards.

So it's kind of like an older movement feature the newer movements feature well basically the minute hand moving the opposite direction.

So if you wind it counterclockwise it advances it forward, but here it's actually the sort of antiquated previous version.

You still have that sense of precise movement, so you can set the minute hand precisely where it needs to go based on the position of the seconds hand, thanks to that minute track at the very edge of the dial—nice and simple.

To ensure the watch's superior water resistance, press the crown back in and screw it tightly against the case.

What makes this beat on the inside?

The caliber is 31 30. You can't see it through the case back, but it's solid steel for added protection. What's the deal with the 31 30?

The 31 30 instead of the 31 35 does not have a date but does have the hour, minute, and second hands in the center.

Basically, the ability to have that stop seconds for precise time setting does feature the Parachrom bleu hairspring and, if I'm not mistaken, K F shock absorbers.

It basically means that it's anti-magnetic with that parachrom bleu coating for that hairspring so you can get relatively close to magnets and the circuitry won't affect the time keeping of the Rolex Oyster watch.

You can also take a few bumps here and there while remaining nice and precise. You can also put it down on a Friday evening. Because the power reserve for this watch is 48 hours, you'll have to pick it up the same time Sunday to give it a good wind.

It is an automatic wind, so you can wind it simply by wearing it, and because it is made of stainless steel, you can wear it every day.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Bracelet

Now, taking a closer look at the bracelet, you do have the oyster bracelet, which is typical of the Oyster Perpetual, as well as Nogales and possibly some Nogales and possibly even Air Kings.

The oyster bracelet flat three piece links across here are all sand brush finish, as is the clasp itself, which is also all sand brush finish with the embossed logo not raised right down the center. When you lift the top to unhook it, you'll see the full Rolex stamped logo on the inside.

Full steel construction and, as is typical of watches of this generation, no easy link five millimeter extension, but you do have some extra little pivot points for the end of the bracelet here, so you can do micro adjustments if you so desire, if you absolutely need it.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual watch is extremely comfortable on my wrist. You can size it by moving that little spring bar in on the sides. Simple and straightforward.

If you require larger sized bar, you can use the screw system. Okay, and while I'm here, I'll try it on and show you how it looks on the wrist again.

This one, which is roughly in the middle at 34 millimeters, fits my wrist perfectly. I recommend this for anyone with a wrist circumference of at least six inches and up to seven and a half inches.

You'll have a little more space there, but you'll still have the same breathability that Rolex oyster bracelets are known for.

There is plenty of space between the links and no tolerance. So, basically, you can wear this all day because it ventilates the wrist, never pinches the skin, never pulls hair out, and always feels comfortable on the wrist.

It also looks absolutely beautiful because the blue geo shape pattern sun ray dial is very, very unique but also typical of the Rolex brand- absolutely beautiful. I adore this blue and wish I could have it for myself.
